  34.    1.  Installing Ditto Tools After Other Backup Programs
  35. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  36. You may experience difficulty running Ditto Tools
  37. if some device files from other backup programs are
  38. found in your SYSTEM.INI file. If you can't start
  39. Ditto Tools, try commenting the following devices out
  40. of your SYSTEM.INI file:
  41.  
  42.     CMSWTAPE.386
  43.     CMSDTAPE.386
  44.     CPBVXD.386
  45.     FASTBACK.386
  46.     IRW286.DRV
  47.     NOVABKP.386
  48.     VIRWT.386
  49.     VITD.386
  50.     DCVXD.386
  51.  
  52. To do this:
  53.  
  54.   1. Open the SYSTEM.INI file using a text editor.
  55.   2. Search for the device name(s), e.g., DEVICE=CPBVXD.386
  56.   3. Type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line.
  57.  
  58.  
  59.    2.  Do Not Run Ditto Tools with Boot-Disk Creator
  60. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  61. Do not run Ditto Tools and the boot-disk creator
  62. at the same time. Floppy drives cannot be used
  63. while the product is running.
  64.  
  65.  
  66.    3.  Setup Disk Space Estimates
  67. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  68. To insure that the user always has enough disk space to
  69. install Ditto Tools, the Setup program displays the
  70. maximum amount of space that may be required for installation.
  71. This estimate is affected by the actual options selected
  72. for install and also includes some space that is necessary
  73. in order to run the setup program.

  76.    4.  Video/DMA Conflict Problems
  77. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  78. Ditto Tools uses direct memory access (DMA) channels to
  79. read and write data. Sometimes using a tape device that is
  80. connected to the floppy controller causes conflicts with
  81. the Windows 3.1 video drivers.
  82.  
  83. During the compatibility test, Ditto Tools determines if
  84. your system has a video/DMA conflict and if so, goes through
  85. a series of tests in an effort to ensure your system runs
  86. reliably with Ditto Tools. After each test a message will
  87. inform you that tests are still being performed. If
  88. Ditto Tools has attempted every test and your
  89. system will still not work reliably, a message will inform
  90. you of the problem.

  92. NOTE: If you experience video/DMA conflicts, try disabling the
  93. Video Caching option (sometimes referred to as Video Shadowing)
  94. in your CMOS setup.
  95.  
  96. If your system locks up when using the backup program, switch to the
  97. Windows Standard VGA driver. If the Windows Standard VGA driver
  98. works, contact your video board manufacturer for an updated driver.
  99.

  101.    5.  Laptop/Notebook Video Conflicts
  102. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  103. Some laptop and notebook computers may have video conflicts
  104. that cause the tape drive to move the tape back and forth
  105. excessively  ("shoe-shining").
  106.  
  107. If you experience this, try minimizing the Ditto Tools icon
  108. and making the Program Manager window active and moving it over
  109. the top of the icon while the program is writing to or reading
  110. from the tape. The Ditto Tools window will activate itself
  111. when the backup or restore is finished, and this action should
  112. speed up your session.

  115.    6.  Power Management Conflicts
  116. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  117. Some Desktop computer systems and laptops have power
  118. management systems that take a "snapshot" of RAM and
  119. store it on the hard drive when they power down. This
  120. may create a conflict if it occurs during a backup or
  121. restore or a tape formatting operation.
  122.  
  123. When using Ditto Tools, it is recommended that you turn
  124. OFF all power management features. If you're using
  125. a laptop, avoid running power management features
  126. by using an outlet rather than batteries.

  129.    7.  Reading Irwin AccuTrak Tapes
  130. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  131. Your Iomega drive can read both QIC-40/-80 and Irwin
  132. AccuTrak tapes. To read an Irwin tape, you must first rebuild
  133. a catalog for the tape. Select Rebuild from the Catalog
  134. menu. When the rebuilding process is complete, you can
  135. load and use the catalog to restore files from that tape.
  136.  
  137. NOTE: You cannot format or write to AccuTrak tapes with your
  138. Iomega drive.
  139.

  141.    8. Maximum Parallel Port Cable Length
  142. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  143. Your parallel port tape drive should be connected directly to
  144. your system's parallel port. If you use the pass-through
  145. connector on the drive to connect a second device such as a
  146. printer, the maximum cable length for both devices is
  147. approximately 10 feet (3 meters).
  148.  
  149. If you have difficulty using your tape drive when a second
  150. device is connected to the pass-through connector, disconnect
  151. the second device and its cable while using the tape drive.
  152.  
  153. If you experience data loss when using a printer connected to
  154. the pass-through connector, shorten the printer's cable if
  155. possible or disconnect the tape drive while printing.
  156.  
  157.  
  158.    9. IRQ Conflicts
  159. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  160. You may experience a conflict in IRQ selection if you are
  161. configuring a parallel port tape drive on a system that
  162. includes a sound card. SoundBlaster cards and compatibles use a
  163. default IRQ of 7, which is also used by a printer port (LPT1).
  164. If this conflict occurs, you can:
  165.  
  166.     *  Change your sound card's IRQ if possible. Some cards do
  167.        not allow this change and some games may not work
  168.        correctly.
  169.  
  170.     *  Check your system documentation to see if your parallel port
  171.        can be configured to use a different interrupt.
  172.  
  173. Devices that may conflict with printer port interrupt:
  174.  
  175.        Sound Cards
  176.        Scanner Cards
  177.        Network Cards
  178.        Bus Mice
  179.        Other printer ports
  180.        Other devices
  181.  
  182. IRQ usage can be determined by using the Microsoft Diagnostics
  183. Program. Exit Windows and type MSD at the DOS prompt. Note that MSD
  184. cannot always diagnose printer port IRQ conflicts. Printing does not
  185. require a hardware interrupt and will function normally even if an
  186. interrupt conflict exists.
  187.  
  188. Symptoms of an IRQ conflict include Ditto Tools not
  189. finding the tape controller and network problems when
  190. backing up to tape.
  191.  
  192.  
  193.   10. Potential Conflict with Screen Savers
  194. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  195. Some screen savers will not activate while a
  196. backup, compare, or restore is running and
  197. Ditto Tools is minimized. For optimum
  198. performance, we recommend that you disable your
  199. screen saver while using Ditto Tools.
  200. However, if you wish to use your screen saver,
  201. you must first make sure Ditto Tools
  202. is not minimized.

  205.   11.  NetWare Files With an Execute Only (X) Attribute
  206. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  207. NetWare files with an execute only (X) attribute will not be
  208. backed up, compared, or overwritten during a restore.
  209.

  211.   12.  Files Not Backed Up by Ditto Tools
  212. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  213. Ditto Tools does not log or back up a number of files
  214. to avoid potential system conflicts if they are restored.
  215.

  244. Additionally, Ditto Tools will not back up a number of
  245. temporary files used by the program when these files are found
  246. in the program's directory.

  249.   13.  Formatting Tapes on 386 Machines
  250. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  251. If you encounter difficulties formatting tapes on a slower 386
  252. machine or receive a message stating "The tape controller is not
  253. responding correctly," make sure your turbo switch is on.
  254.  
  255.  
  256.   14. Hardware Compression Not Supported
  257. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  258. Ditto Tools for Windows, Version 5.0, does not support
  259. the hardware compression function found on some high-speed
  260. controller cards.
  261.

  263.   15.  Restoring Files with NetWare Delete Inhibit or Rename
  264.        Inhibit Attributes
  265. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  266. During a Restore, you cannot overwrite files which have
  267. the NetWare Delete Inhibit (D) or Rename Inhibit (R)
  268. attribute set. To restore these files, you must first manually
  269. remove the Delete Inhibit or Rename Inhibit attribute.

  272.   16. Performance Issues on QIC-3020 Parallel Port Tape Drives
  273. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  274. If you have a QIC-3020 Parallel Port tape drive you may
  275. experience a performance limitation, especially on
  276. systems with unidirectional parallel ports. This combination
  277. may not transfer data from the tape drive to the system fast
  278. enough to allow the tape to run continuously, or "stream."
  279. However, if you reformat the tape using the QIC-3010 format,
  280. the tape will run at half the speed of a QIC-3020 and stream
  281. more of the time. This will result in faster net restore times
  282. and less wear on the tape drive, but will cut the tape's
  283. capacity in half.

  286.   17. Controller Conflicts
  287. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  288. The Promise 2300 EIDE VLB controller must run in fast
  289. mode (/f parameter) in order to work with floppy tape drives.

  292.   18. Possible Video Conflicts
  293. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  294. Problems have occurred with various video drivers and the video
  295. compatibility test in Windows. If your software hangs during the
  296. Compatibility Test, try to get an update of the video driver
  297. from the card manufacturer. Conflicts have occurred with Diamond
  298. Stealth 64 and ATI Ultra Mach 32/64 cards.

  301.   19. EZ-Drive Disk Manager
  302. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  303. The following information applies to systems
  304. with high-capacity hard drives using the Micro
  305. House EZ-Drive disk manager:
  306.  
  307. Before starting Ditto Tools for Windows, make
  308. sure that the Micro House EZ-Drive Virtual Driver
  309. is installed by running the SETUP.EXE program on
  310. the EZ-Drive installation diskette. This setup program
  311. adds the line "device=MH32BIT.SYS" to the [386Enh]
  312. section of your SYSTEM.INI file.
  313.  
  314. Then follow the steps below:
  315.  
  316. 1.  Click the Windows Control Panel's "Enhanced" icon.
  317. 2.  Select the Virtual Memory... button.
  318. 3.  Select the Change>> button.
  319.  
  320. Ensure the "Use 32-Bit Disk Access" check box is checked.
  321. This check box must remain checked in order to use
  322. Ditto Tools for Windows.
  323.  
  324.  
  325. If you continue to encounter problems using Ditto Tools
  326. for Windows, and if you are using a QIC floppy tape or
  327. parallel port tape drive, follow the steps below:
  328.  
  329. 1.  Open Ditto Tools.
  330. 2.  Select the Configure button.
  331. 3.  Select the Settings button.
  332.     The Settings dialog appears.
  333. 4.  Select the Most Compatible setting in
  334.     the DMA Operation combo box.
  335.  
  336. This results in lower performance, but may be necessary on some
  337. systems for proper operation.
